Episode 37B: Orange County, CA (Part 2)

Before the format change, we continue digging through Orange County, CA with 3 more record stores, all of which are within a ten-mile radius! I hit all five stores in the same day and you can too, today I touch upon three stores in Costa Mesa.

TRACK LISTING
1. Said (Titoli) - Calibro 35. A stupid-good track by a current group that pays homage to the famous Italian soundtrack composers of the 70s/80s. Hard, yet groovy.
2. Fuga Nel Campo Di Grano (versione Alternativa) - Stelvio Cipriani. Likely one of Calibro 35's influences.
3. Gotta Find a Way - Myrth. I found out about this track through a thing called 'Vinyl Snobs' in San Diego, which I go to whenever I can. This song just makes me smile!
4. Warm the Pot - Willard Burton. Stank.
5. Rock Bass Fishin - Orrville High School Jazz Band. Ridiculous funk from the archives from a bunch of High School kids!
6. Purification Part 1 - Funkshone. Funky track that delivers.
7. I'll Always Love you - Chuck a Luck and the Lovemen.
8. The Goose that Laid the Golden Egg - Funkadelic. From 'Toys', some rock/funk guitar goodness.
9. Prophecy III - Boo Boo McAfee. The whole song is a beat!
10. Funky Bell Bottoms - Ironing Board Sam. A recent 45 I picked up that I dig.
11. Samba de Romance - Kenny Cox. The first reissue from Amir Abdullah's 180 Proof Records, who is blessing us with gems from the old Strata catalog.
12. Wake Up - Law. Stoopid funk, for only $2 on 45? I'll take it.
13. Violet Zone - Low Drivers
14. Powerhouse - Rough Ride. Library funkiness.
15. Rhythm Masters - Black Conversation. I don't know a damn thing about this record, but I know it sounded good when I played it on my portable turntable so I bought it.
16. Sam and the Soulwalkers - Soul Walk. Version!
17. Elle et Moi - Max Berlin. This one is for the ladies.

Bonus Mix: Tokusatsu Sounds Part 1

Whew, have I had some things come up over the past few weeks! You name it, I probably dealt with it (which is the reason for the delay in getting Soul traveling 37 Part 2 up). Since that episode still isn't done I threw together a bonus mix - I've been on a big Tokusatsu kick for a while and decided to put some tracks together in a short mix. In here are some suspense cues, themes, tracks from bonus records and a few rarities as well. No track titles, just enjoy!

Episode 37: Orange County, CA

So after 37 episodes, it's time to change the format. We've been chugging along with the current format for a couple years now, and while I still love record stores (1) by focusing on record stores I never get a chance to discuss the other ways to get records these days and (2) I've never had a chance to explore the other meaning of the 'soul' in 'Soul Traveling'. What feeds our soul? To that point, while the podcast will still have plenty of music I'm going to move the podcast to more of a talk format and do my best to have guests every episode so we can talk about records, music and everything else that drives them.

As for this, 'the last of the old style' episode, we're going to end things with a two-part bang. Recently I went to 5 record stores within an 8-mile radius in my former home Orange County, CA on the same day and got enough vinyl to make a two-part podcast. This podcast focuses on two Huntington Beach shops, TKO Records and Vinyl Solution (both of which are predominantly punk record stores). That didn't stop me from grabbing good non-punk stuff at both spots!

Track Listing:
1. The Two Things in One - Walk on By: The second this track kicks in you know you have a beast on your hands. I got this the last time I was in Groove Merchant SF - when I walked in the store this jawn was blaring and it was a slightly religious moment. Sold!
2. Muscles - I'm Gonna Synthesize You: Tuff drum break in the beginning, and I think that main riff is really dope. It's got that 'you're gonna make funk face to this' vibe to it.
3. DeRobert and the Half-Truths - I Got Burned: brand-new soul that sounds old, out of Tennessee!
4. Stelvio Cipriani - Astaroth: some Italian cinema music.
5. Creative Source - You Can't Hide Love: I can't put my finger on why I like this track, it's just got that vibe you know? Good summery stuff.
6. KPM Library - Alto Glide: what a great track for mellowing out.
7. Buddy guy - I Smell a Rat: 9 minutes of blues intensity! Great guitar work throughout too.
8. Lalo Schifrin - Magnum Force main title. How about that drum break in the middle?
9. Agni Natchathiram - Raja Rajavin Rajan: 80s Casio-agogo bell goodness, a super-catchy song from a Tamil film.
10. Funk with a Big Foot - Quazar: File under "P-Funk with nice drum intro".
11. Savoy Brown - I'm Tired so where am I: I get the feeling this track was one of those spur of the moment things - just a little percussion and that's it. Completely works for me though.
12. Tim / Gary / Romeo - 777 - another one from Funk Night Records! They just keep cranking out killer funk 45s.

I mention everything pretty much in the podcast, but Groove Merchant is so good it makes me question going to other record stores. While it's not a big record store it's stocked full of quality records - not your run of the mill stuff either, we're talking lots of choice stuff. This place is a must stop for record hunters when they come through SF, and while I keep going to other stores (otherwise there wouldn't be a podcast) I could spend 100% of my record budget here and be happy. Groove Merchant was name-checked by the Beastie Boys, is known by everyone who knows, and recently celebrated its 20th year in business with a really nice compilation that you should check out if you don't have it already.

1. I Walk on Guilded Splinters - Johnny Jenkins
2. I've Been Working - Wild HOney
3. Hard Working Man - Power of Zeus
4. Don't knock my love - Sixth sense
5. Jimmy's THeme - Mario Caldato Jr

6. John McLaughlin - Miles Daivs
7. Suite - Louis Xavier
8. Solar Level - Johnny ALmond

Episode 35: Memphis, TN

        Location: Memphis, TN
Destination: Goner Records

We hit Memphis a while back for a trip to Shangri-La Records, but Memphis doesn't have just one record store so we're back! Goner Records also draws on Memphis' rich musical heritage, with nice sections of Blues, Sun Records stuff and (most pertinent to me) Stax Records stuff. Not just the big artists and big singles, but all of the Stax labels (such as Volt) and less-remembered records from the Stax history - some of which are on part 2 of this podcast. I liked it so much I went back for a second day of record diggin and continued to find good stuff the whole time.

For food, there are lots of great Memphis BBQ spots and I hit as many as I could while I was there - the standouts being Corky's a The Germantown Commissary (which I believe I mentioned last time). If you hit the Germantown Commissary make sure to get a slice of the Caramel Cake - the sh*t is dope! I believe both places do mail-order so you can always get the BBQ goodness (but no caramel cake) delivered to your door.

Track Listing:
1. Arlene Brown - Impeach Me Baby
2. Montclairs - Hung Up on Your Love
3. Betty Wright - Baby Come Back
4. Sly and the Family Stone - Let Me Have it All
5. Shorty Billups - Black Cat
6. 100 Proof Aged in SOul - Somebody's Been Sleeping
7. Bill Withers - You
8. Charlie Clemons - God is Fire (Superior Elevation)
9. Margie Joseph - Punish Me
10. Bo-Keys - Cracker Jack
11. Sons of Slum - What Goes Around Comes Around
12. Bar Kays - AJ the Housefly
13. Isaac Hayes - Pursuit of the Pimpmobile
14. Bar-Kays - Son of Shaft (Live at Wattstax)
